Sunday Sunday

Monday, May 17th, 2010
Ah yes, once again, the season is upon us. Another fancy afternoon at Casa Kate + Angela + our favourite soon-to-be summertime beverage, Fresita- and that’s what I call a party folks.

We first tasted the sweet nectar that is Fresita at WxW and soon discovered that it was even more fabulous with a healthy dose of Grey Goose with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. And at $13.75, for a bottle of sparkling wine infused with hand picked strawberries, you can’t go wrong. That’s right… “hand picked” people. No messing around over here.

So when I moved into this joint last September, we had a brief fleeting time where we could enjoy the wonder that was the backyard oasis before the cold started to set in. Well, I have since, planted a little garden, hung some candle holders from the tree branches, and re-borrowed the fabulous little mattress from the man-of-our-hearts Nathan Gauld so that we can set up our own version of paradise right here in parkdale.
Our house is conveniently located a mere stones throw from the Brock St LCBO which makes for interesting encounters when the bums save up enough for a can or two of Lakeport and decide to go drink them in the parking lot immediately next to our house. Thankfully our fence offers up some semblance of privacy although when they start talking to themselves it makes for solid entertainment.

When asking who wanted a blanket or pillow, Kat demanded… “Do you have any fur?” Well pardon me, while I go find whatever dead carcass I may have laying around inside. As Kat is dead set on only draping herself in the finest, I found the fur collar to a BEBE jacket from like 10 years ago that I couldn’t bring myself to throw away, and apparently, it sufficed.

Conclusions: 1) I’ve decided in advance that this summer will kill all other summers as things shape up nicely with The Advocates and the weather is going to be maaahhhvelous. 2) Whenever you get a bunch of London Ontario expats together and start bumping some dirrrty south hip hop, the party is gonna be “off the chain”. Cuz don’t ya know, London is home to some of the most straight up gangsta girls around…. Just ask my sister. Werd.

Toronto’s who’s who and he’s and she’s gathered last week to celebrate the 2010 WOMEN x WOMEN featured photographers at Thrush Holmes Empire Gallery. Never in my days as a 20 something running rampant in the streets of downtown Toronto have I encountered such an eclectic, passionate, and all around fabulous crowd gathered under one roof.
Thank you to all of our tireless volunteers who helped us make the event run smoothly and especially to our gracious sponsors and industry partners who made the event not only possible, but successful beyond one’s imagination.
Here are some event pics. There are more available on our Facebook Fan Page. Creep away!

Fashion Week is Upon Us… Well Sort Of

Monday, March 22nd, 2010
Spring is in the air and you know what that means… another season of fall/winter fashion from our country’s finest purveyors of style is upon us. Although, It feels like fashion week has been spread across a three week stint starting with last Tuesday’s Halston Heritage launch.
We’re busting our asses to prepare for our second installment of WOMEN x WOMEN which includes an industry and media reception on April 1 and a public exhibition on April 2 (Good Friday). We hope you will be pleasantly surprised by the slew of visuals from this year’s show- I know we are pretty effing stoked about it.
Mind you, we of course, will find the time to attend events every night leading up to the big show. Why, you ask, would we put ourselves through such straining schedules? Because we’re young, unmarried, no babies, no divorces, no mother in laws, obligatory brunches, potluck lunches, and we’ve just got to dammit!
So last Thursday we hit The Courthouse to check out Breeyn McCarney in a sweaty room filled with hipsters and Toronto who’s whos. Breeyn presented her new collection “Hard Boiled Wonderland” to an intrigued audience.

Then Friday, we raced as fast as my little Mazda 3 could take us along the Gardiner to make it out to the middle of Bayview and Where the Fuck Am I Street where the Audi dealership is not-so-conveniently located. This is the second season that Greta Contstantine has shown their collection in the converted industrial garage in the basement. And can I just say, ‘Wow. Now THAT is a fashion show. Seriously.”
The show included Toronto’s top models including my hometown favorite Elise Helene Gatschene strutting along the seemingly never-ending runway in long gowns that were intricately draped and tailored in deep rich hues.
I was holding my friggin breath as they marched confidently in 6 inch stiletto heels while the fabric draped just at floor level, danced dangerously close to what could have turned into a complete runway disaster. Luckily no models did any face plants on the sure to be less than forgiving concrete floors. I think I had fingernail marks dug into my palms from clenching my hands while watching. Geez! Good thing there was a well stocked bar full of Stoli upstairs where we could calm our nerves and fawn all over the sensational pieces from visionary Greta Constantine designers, Kirk Pickersgill & Stephen Wong. Good show.

Saturday Kate and I took it easy… and by took it easy I mean Kate and TK polishing off a magnum of Jackson Triggs Cabernet and me getting into a snifter glass full of Los Arangos and then, feeling “inspired” at 4am, staging a fashion show in our bathroom.

Ah yes, fashion is indeed in the air. People are busting out their leather jackets in lieu of parkas, Kate’s been wearing her cut off jeans and striped Tshirts, and strolling through Yorkville last week, I saw some eleventeen year olds walking around in short shorts, spaghetti strap tank tops and flip flops. All I could think is, patience young grasshopper, there’s plenty of time left in the year and your preteen life for you to solicit inappropriate attention from older men. Sometimes less isn’t always more… sometimes more is… more… or whatever. Either way, put it away ya skank. You’re pasty legs are blinding me.

Meet Our New Friend: Dash Roberts

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Dash- meet everyone. Everyone- meet Dash. Dash was made by Roncy artist Iner Souster and he is not the first nor the second, but the FOURTH robot I have acquired from his studio.
You see, he has this studio full of junk and Iner is kind of like a mad scientist working away there all day. He makes absurd instruments, fauxbots and all kinds of interesting little trinkets that are bound to spark up conversation in your otherwise boring living room.
So before you think about getting a dog, or a cat, or a baby to keep you company for christssake, consider heading down to Queen St W to get a robot of your very own- and they’re affordable ya cheapskate.
Ciao

Where in the World Have The Advocates Been?

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

So this is what they mean when they talk about bad blogging. A pseudo, trying-to-be respectable blog that disappears off the radar for a week. Tisk tisk. I lament in shame.
Well, if you must know. I’ve been turning over a new leaf, or turning the corner, or taking it one day at a time. No, no I did not just emerge from the merky depths of rehab. I’ve been trying to find a regime of regular fitness and productivity. One that doesn’t include brunch followed by a delicious box of pastries from School Restaurant. Sorry, they’re fucking delicious though!
So I’ve rediscovered my love for Hot Yoga. I’ve been going pretty much every day for the last 2 weeks. Something about laying on a mat in the middle of a room with above tropical temps, 40 other hot bodied yogi’s, sweating and stretching and panting. Me likey. It’s pretty much like crack…. And yeah, I can’t get enough.
On The Advocates front, we’ve got some interesting things in the works. Unfortunately nothing we can publicize at the moment. I know, we suck. Stay tuned.
Highlights from the last week include:
Kate and I getting our asses kicked in a church basement in little Italy (we started Best Body Bootcamp together-Advocates unite!!!)
Eating lunch 4 of the last seven days at Jamie Kennedy’s Gilead Cafe. Pretty much… total awesomeness… local food, served in a lovely, airy, bistro/cafeteria type setting, tucked away in a back alley of Queen St East. Loving it.
Watching the second last episode of Jersey Shore on MTV- fist pumping like CHAMPS! Is it bad that I’m actually sad to see it go? Word on the street is that they’ve signed on for a second season.
Meeting with Lorne Gertner of Hill and Gertner to discuss “the future of The Advocates”, or what we so commonly refer to as “our plan to take over the world”
Brunch at Table 17. Go there and get yourself some. That’s all I have to say about that.
Oh yea, and famed photographer Renata Kaveh, snapped some pics of us for our shiny new website. Ch-ch-ch-check it out

The Artist Group Limited Holiday Fête

Friday, December 11th, 2009
The only thing remotely enjoyable about the recent drop to frigid low temps and icy-as-fuck sidewalks in stilettos, is the promise of warmth when you make it to your best friend’s (and fellow Advocate’s) holiday gathering at The Artist Group Limited offices on King West. Oh, and the Soy Silk product samples and Amarula warmers greeting us at the door didn’t hurt either. Nice touch!

Now, can we get down to business and discuss what I really want to talk about most… how frickin fab our Kate looked in that dress? Another by-product of the vintage clothes bomb which went off in our living room earlier this week. By the way, I’ll never reveal the source!

Kat’s dress was a vintage find in Kensington earlier this month. Paired with grey Zara heels and black tights, it made for an intriguing take on the classic design of the dress. Through the packed office space, Kat yelled out “Is that food??” She found herself a bowl of over-sized corn chips and pretty much settled in for the duration of our stay at TAG.

Now, these pictures are shotty at best, but I would just like to point out the unique cut of the neckline on this Roni dress I got in NYC. The first time I went to that store, I scored three dresses: One of which is an orangey/red cocktail dress I wore to our WOMEN x WOMEN event in the spring, the other is a totally versatile day-to-night dress that can be paired with boots and a leather jacket, and I also got this purple dress that has such classic lines. That store is easily one of my favourite, and most memorable finds in New York. Oh, and the staff were ridiculously helpful as well. The associate helping me was a freelance stylist and gave me some amazing tips!
