Sunday Sunday

Monday, May 17th, 2010
Ah yes, once again, the season is upon us. Another fancy afternoon at Casa Kate + Angela + our favourite soon-to-be summertime beverage, Fresita- and that’s what I call a party folks.

We first tasted the sweet nectar that is Fresita at WxW and soon discovered that it was even more fabulous with a healthy dose of Grey Goose with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. And at $13.75, for a bottle of sparkling wine infused with hand picked strawberries, you can’t go wrong. That’s right… “hand picked” people. No messing around over here.

So when I moved into this joint last September, we had a brief fleeting time where we could enjoy the wonder that was the backyard oasis before the cold started to set in. Well, I have since, planted a little garden, hung some candle holders from the tree branches, and re-borrowed the fabulous little mattress from the man-of-our-hearts Nathan Gauld so that we can set up our own version of paradise right here in parkdale.
Our house is conveniently located a mere stones throw from the Brock St LCBO which makes for interesting encounters when the bums save up enough for a can or two of Lakeport and decide to go drink them in the parking lot immediately next to our house. Thankfully our fence offers up some semblance of privacy although when they start talking to themselves it makes for solid entertainment.

When asking who wanted a blanket or pillow, Kat demanded… “Do you have any fur?” Well pardon me, while I go find whatever dead carcass I may have laying around inside. As Kat is dead set on only draping herself in the finest, I found the fur collar to a BEBE jacket from like 10 years ago that I couldn’t bring myself to throw away, and apparently, it sufficed.

Conclusions: 1) I’ve decided in advance that this summer will kill all other summers as things shape up nicely with The Advocates and the weather is going to be maaahhhvelous. 2) Whenever you get a bunch of London Ontario expats together and start bumping some dirrrty south hip hop, the party is gonna be “off the chain”. Cuz don’t ya know, London is home to some of the most straight up gangsta girls around…. Just ask my sister. Werd.

Shoe Love: Alli Pigden

Monday, April 19th, 2010
First Alli, let me apologize for our resident Trend Spotter, Kat Turchick accosting you at the Balenciaga party at The Room last Thursday. Your shoes were fierce and you didn’t stand a chance.
Meet Alli Pidgen, a lovely and charming stylist at MTV and the wearer of these fine Dolce and Gabbana wedges. We’ll be seeing you around…

Yvan Rodic & Balenciaga at The White Space

Monday, April 19th, 2010
What better to do the day after wrapping a fashion film shoot with a certain Hollywood celebrity (we won’t tell who yet) than head on over to The Bay’s top floor where The White Space, which holds some of the city’s most sought after designers, was hosting the fragrance launch for Balenciaga Paris.
Upon entry, a handsome young man walks up to us and steals us away to a private part of the party. Not entirely uncommon until he starts snapping pictures and we clue in to the fact that this is the Facehunter, Yvan Rodic, himself and we have been facehunted.
Niice.

Could Alexis and her sister, Erin Jade be any more frickin gorgeous? Me thinks not. She made a cameo in our fashion film this week. Renata Morales, she did you proud.

Lex with Michelle Bilodeau of Front Row Magazine. PS they named WxW “THE” event of LGFW.

Ok, so here is Yvan with Ashleigh and Amanda of The Society, who hosted the event, conducting the Q & A, and Jen McNeely of SheDoesTheCity.com, asking a question. In one hand, Yvan is a holding a microphone, in the other, a raw carrot for “more candid questions”. So then he started nonchalantly gnawing on it, like, ‘what, you guys don’t do this in Canada? It’s SO hot in Europe right now.’ Goddamit, someone get me a fucking carrot!
At some point, we realized that we lost our little pet Advocate, Penny Lane, and went out in search of her into the white abyss where alcoholic beverages were not allowed. We found her, rubbing up against the Halston Heritage collection, with her face. Yes, she was having a moment, but we knew this was coming since the Halston Heritage Launch several weeks ago.

"I Hope You Have An Extremely Wonderful Day"

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010
… says the teller at the bank. Kat and I are instantly caught off guard by this extraordinary gesture of well wishing and we can’t help but look at each other with skepticism. Got to love jaded downtown living.
We sauntered down to Bellwood’s yesterday and stopped in at Chippy’s for some fish… mmmyea.
The thing that was misleading was the everyone was doing their own laissez-faire lounge-type thing in the park, making it look so carefree, only the ground was still damp as shit. Were these hipsters all resigning to accepting a wet ass or did they find the only dry patches in the park?
The minute I sat down I got a soggy bottom. Bollocks. So we sat on our notebooks and agreed to document our plans mentally. ‘What were we there for again?’ Oh yea, that’s right. Kat and I are planning a Vlog series on Vintage shopping in the TDot. So yea, watch out for that in the coming weeks…. mmmhmm!

Toronto’s who’s who and he’s and she’s gathered last week to celebrate the 2010 WOMEN x WOMEN featured photographers at Thrush Holmes Empire Gallery. Never in my days as a 20 something running rampant in the streets of downtown Toronto have I encountered such an eclectic, passionate, and all around fabulous crowd gathered under one roof.
Thank you to all of our tireless volunteers who helped us make the event run smoothly and especially to our gracious sponsors and industry partners who made the event not only possible, but successful beyond one’s imagination.
Here are some event pics. There are more available on our Facebook Fan Page. Creep away!

The Return of Glamour: The Halston Heritage Launch

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010
Penny Lane and I hit the Halston Heritage Launch hosted by Sarah Jessica Parker (her awesomeness to the rest of us) last eve, and needless to say, we hit it hard. We wore vintage dresses that we scored at Frou Frou on Queen West (Roncy) and I vote them a total success. We were a little underwhelmed by the lack of creativity expressed at what should have been a fabulous throw back event in honour of the King of Disco attire- Halston.
I was a little disappointed in my picture taking skills as I was only able to get a pic of the back of SJP’s pretty head before a host said my camera would be confiscated if I took another snap. Dick.

Toronto’s own Fritz Helder & the Phantoms (or at least two parts of the group) performed a racy act involving face decals and ass floss *ahem* American Apparel Disco Shorts – whatever werk it if you got it girrrrl.
Then came out the dancers in the dresses which I thought were totally lack luster compared to Kat’s vintage find for a fraction of the price. The girls were dancing on the lit disco-esque stage and trying to coerce the gawkers to come on stage and bust their moves. But in typical Toronto fashion, every one was too cool or chicken shit so the stage stood empty except for the disco queens who danced while exchanging stink eyes with each other over the lame crowd and the attendees watched awkwardly- and it was awesome. I have it on good authority from a cater waiter who I knew, that they were instructed to leave their posts and go dance on stage in an effort to try to get a dance floor going. Ha. Fail.

This dusty pink cape dress was the one stand out piece from the show last night. Kat and I both want it in our closets. $325 at Neiman Marcus

And of course, as per usual, it’s not a party until Kat starts eating. Woot. Go mini burger.

Is it wrong that the bathrooms are my favorite part of This is London?

"Wearing It" By Penny Lane – Winter Wear

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010
Living in a country like Canada, winter is an important time of year to address your wardrobe. For a woman on a limited budget, as I’m sure most 20-something year olds out there are, it’s smart to narrow down your search for a perfect winter wardrobe to a few key items. There are three pieces items every woman should absolutely invest in.
First, you need a good quality bag of a decent size so that it can hold all your gear yet still look fashionable when you carry it from work to play. If you choose a semi-neutral color such as a chestnut or a gray, it can take you into spring or even summer. Next, you need a sturdy fashionable pair of boots. A fur (or faux ) lining is a big bonus for the winter months and try to avoid synthetic materials as they will lack longevity. Most importantly, you absolutely need to invest in a good winter jacket. There are many fashionable and warm options available today and I promise it will be the best money you will spend when it comes to a true wardrobe investment. Don’t be nervous to spend a little more than you were hoping too, because this is the one item you will be wearing every single day. If money allows, I would recommend owning 2 versions. A classic black peacoat is a staple for the milder weather and fancier occasions, not to mention goes with absolutely everything and will never be out of style. However, if your budget only permits one major coat purchase, go for a fitted and fashionable parka. I definitely recommend getting a longer version, slightly cinched in the waist, with a good hood and a warm lining. I don’t favor the versions ending at the waist and puffing out throughout the torso, because they’re not very flattering for a woman’s figure. They aren’t slimming or fashionable and imagine attempting to wear something like that with a dress, a skirt, or, god forbid, a pair of heels? Not a good look for anyone.

There is a myriad of options available in stores today and I’m proud to say that the most popular seem to be Canadian labels (who better to design warm comfy winter wear than Canadians themselves?). We’re all familiar with the popular arctic wear label Canada Goose, but my favorite option when it comes to stylish, flattering and warm winter wear is the Montreal-based superluxe label Mackage (several designs pictured above) which designs wool, fur, parka and leather outwear for both sexes. Fur (real and faux) has made its way back into fashionable winter wear, and there are some really adorable and glam options available at vintage stores across Toronto. Beware though, sizes and styles go fast and be careful when selecting a vintage piece. Make sure to check the hardware and lining as well as inspect for stains or rips; they’re often difficult to repair and you may be stuck with an item in an undesirable condition.
Once you’ve got the basics down, other winter staples are easier to add as your budget allows. Sweaters, wraps, wool trousers, cute knit berets and leather gloves all add great finishing touches to a fashionable winter look. Remember, you never have to compromise style when considering warmth and comfort. Plan strategically and be reasonable with what’s acceptable for the weather as well as your lifestyle and budget. The building blocks will lead you to a great look and a smart wardrobe. Happy planning!

The Artist Group Limited Holiday Fête

Friday, December 11th, 2009
The only thing remotely enjoyable about the recent drop to frigid low temps and icy-as-fuck sidewalks in stilettos, is the promise of warmth when you make it to your best friend’s (and fellow Advocate’s) holiday gathering at The Artist Group Limited offices on King West. Oh, and the Soy Silk product samples and Amarula warmers greeting us at the door didn’t hurt either. Nice touch!

Now, can we get down to business and discuss what I really want to talk about most… how frickin fab our Kate looked in that dress? Another by-product of the vintage clothes bomb which went off in our living room earlier this week. By the way, I’ll never reveal the source!

Kat’s dress was a vintage find in Kensington earlier this month. Paired with grey Zara heels and black tights, it made for an intriguing take on the classic design of the dress. Through the packed office space, Kat yelled out “Is that food??” She found herself a bowl of over-sized corn chips and pretty much settled in for the duration of our stay at TAG.

Now, these pictures are shotty at best, but I would just like to point out the unique cut of the neckline on this Roni dress I got in NYC. The first time I went to that store, I scored three dresses: One of which is an orangey/red cocktail dress I wore to our WOMEN x WOMEN event in the spring, the other is a totally versatile day-to-night dress that can be paired with boots and a leather jacket, and I also got this purple dress that has such classic lines. That store is easily one of my favourite, and most memorable finds in New York. Oh, and the staff were ridiculously helpful as well. The associate helping me was a freelance stylist and gave me some amazing tips!

Did you Happen To See The Most Beautiful Girl In The World?

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Ah, Miss Penny Lane, Kat, Katerina, Associate Advocate, what-the-fuck-ever… when you came over to our house last night and sifted your way through the vintage clothing bomb that had gone off in our living room, I knew there would be something good in there for you…

It was a typical Thursday evening… I was relaxing in the bath with a glass of Pinot Grigio and we were plotting out our course of action for the night. Then, I peeked from behind the curtain to see Kat donning this red Winston dress. What a dress!
It was like the stars aligned, and the Earth stood still… and yeah, all of those existential metaphors. What a vision! Now all I need to do is find a party worthy of showing off my little red sports car.
If it doesn’t come up soon, I’m settling for prosecco and corn chips while we dance around the living room, or maybe brunch at Mitzi’s!

Thursday @ The AGO

Friday, October 30th, 2009
The party train continued after a brief relapse early this week. Yesterday we did dinner at Terroni with my new most favourite person in the world, Kat Turchik, otherwise known as Penny Lane. We hit up the pre-halloween party at Balisi, the Desaranno event at Ame, and finally… the CRASH event at the AGO- good times had by all!

We checked out this amazing stuff by Cube Works. The thing that was most surprising about the 16 year old rubik’s cube master was how fast he works to create these pieces. It was quite a sight to behold.

Daniel Buckman from Sony BMG. I swear, everywhere I go, he’s spinning, or final scratching, or whatever the kids are calling it these days.

Oh Kat, you’re so multi talented.

Our fave homegrown magazine, TCHAD Mag was at the event too.

Some amazing live violin entertainment.
Fritz Helder and The Phantoms threw down an AMAZING performance as they literally danced their way through the tuxedo’d crowd gathered in the new atrium of The AGO.

This woman was right in the front row dancing along with the hot young things. This is what I aspire to be.
