Canadian (Heritage) is Cool

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Of course Canada is a great place to live and we’re all lucky to be here, but Canada is not, generally speaking, “cool.”

But could it be that “Canadian-ness,” as a style, a culture, is cool again? Or maybe not “again”… because… was it ever cool? Hmm, perhaps not? Alright, so I’m going to suggest something here… maybe Canada is not necessarily any cooler than it ever was, but I think we’re seeing a Canadian Heritage trend happening.

Check out Classified’s surprisingly popular Oh Canada song, which starts off with “A Heritage Moment”…

Or that the sales of Canada Goose jackets have “inexplicably” soared this year, with the jackets becoming a much coveted item. I can’t believe I see teenagers wearing these things (don’t they go for something like $800 a piece? WTF?) You may recall my biz partner Angela’s lovely post entitled, “Bitch! That’s My Jacket Episode #1,” over a woman’s suspicion that Angela stole her Canada Goose jacket… in bar packed with Canada Goose jackets. And I can’t remember if Angela posted about her experience a week later… but she actually got her jacket stolen (and subsequently wrestled it back) at a Montreal bar.

Apparently, the Canada Goose thing was just one of those tipping point trends, largely seeded by the brand itself when the founder’s granddaughter took over in 2001.

The Bay leveraged the Canadian Heritage trend this past year with their clever PR initiative of tasking ten Canadian designers to turn the traditional Bay point blanket into a winter coat.

Even the originals are doing pretty well.

Our friends on the leading edge of fashion have been playing with this too. One of our favorite photographers Troy Moth did a photo shoot for HOT LIGHTS which mixed aboriginal inspired pieces with PVC leather, to create beautiful, fashion forward looks.

And another fashion photographer Mackenzie Duncan co-created a fashion film called Cazar with Stuart McIntyre for Filler Magazine, which plays on an aboriginal/colonialist theme (I think… what do you think this film is about? Either way, I like it) and uses several Canadian leathers and designers.

So what’s the upshot here? High quality, staunchly Canadian brands, like Roots Leather, are primed to see sales increase this year. Maybe even the awards jacket will be making a return.

How To Wear a Jumper (Correctly) Starring Penny Lane

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010
When I call up Penny Lane and ask how dressed up she’s getting for our dinner on College last night, and she replies, “I don’t know, I might just wear a jumper.” I’m not going to lie… I actually cringed a little. Thinking to myself, I don’t know that there’s ever been a time I’ve seen a jumper done right. I immediately envision mental images of Amber Rose, all squeezed into spandex like a tube steak.
Ick. Nonetheless, I opt for my FAVOURITE Le Coq Sportif boots and head on out. I just got a SO WARM Canada Goose jacket, and it will forever be my winter saviour. I don’t care where I’m going, I’m wearing it. Period.
Well of course she shows up and puts my tomboy Monday look to glamour shame, gliding out the door in her beautiful brown Mackage parka (Yes, the one she just featured on her first “Wearing It” article). Also wearing this off white H&M jumper below. I asked Kat what she likes about jumpers and she said, “It’s like getting to wear pajamas out in public. It’s great”. Seconded.
Only Kat would sit down at Vivoli and order a drink that looked like a party in a fishbowl (otherwise known as a white Sangria), while I’m stuck with my boring glass of Valpolicella. Had I known “party in a glass” was on the menu, I would have rsvp’d.
We top it off with gelato next door, yes, we were aware it’s the dead of winter. Instead of eating mine in the shop, I tried an experiment of seeing if I could get my gelato cup home before it melted and got all over my car. Not a total success, but I still enjoyed some of it.

"Wearing It" By Penny Lane – Winter Wear

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010
Living in a country like Canada, winter is an important time of year to address your wardrobe. For a woman on a limited budget, as I’m sure most 20-something year olds out there are, it’s smart to narrow down your search for a perfect winter wardrobe to a few key items. There are three pieces items every woman should absolutely invest in.
First, you need a good quality bag of a decent size so that it can hold all your gear yet still look fashionable when you carry it from work to play. If you choose a semi-neutral color such as a chestnut or a gray, it can take you into spring or even summer. Next, you need a sturdy fashionable pair of boots. A fur (or faux ) lining is a big bonus for the winter months and try to avoid synthetic materials as they will lack longevity. Most importantly, you absolutely need to invest in a good winter jacket. There are many fashionable and warm options available today and I promise it will be the best money you will spend when it comes to a true wardrobe investment. Don’t be nervous to spend a little more than you were hoping too, because this is the one item you will be wearing every single day. If money allows, I would recommend owning 2 versions. A classic black peacoat is a staple for the milder weather and fancier occasions, not to mention goes with absolutely everything and will never be out of style. However, if your budget only permits one major coat purchase, go for a fitted and fashionable parka. I definitely recommend getting a longer version, slightly cinched in the waist, with a good hood and a warm lining. I don’t favor the versions ending at the waist and puffing out throughout the torso, because they’re not very flattering for a woman’s figure. They aren’t slimming or fashionable and imagine attempting to wear something like that with a dress, a skirt, or, god forbid, a pair of heels? Not a good look for anyone.

There is a myriad of options available in stores today and I’m proud to say that the most popular seem to be Canadian labels (who better to design warm comfy winter wear than Canadians themselves?). We’re all familiar with the popular arctic wear label Canada Goose, but my favorite option when it comes to stylish, flattering and warm winter wear is the Montreal-based superluxe label Mackage (several designs pictured above) which designs wool, fur, parka and leather outwear for both sexes. Fur (real and faux) has made its way back into fashionable winter wear, and there are some really adorable and glam options available at vintage stores across Toronto. Beware though, sizes and styles go fast and be careful when selecting a vintage piece. Make sure to check the hardware and lining as well as inspect for stains or rips; they’re often difficult to repair and you may be stuck with an item in an undesirable condition.
Once you’ve got the basics down, other winter staples are easier to add as your budget allows. Sweaters, wraps, wool trousers, cute knit berets and leather gloves all add great finishing touches to a fashionable winter look. Remember, you never have to compromise style when considering warmth and comfort. Plan strategically and be reasonable with what’s acceptable for the weather as well as your lifestyle and budget. The building blocks will lead you to a great look and a smart wardrobe. Happy planning!
