Thursday @ The AGO

Friday, October 30th, 2009
The party train continued after a brief relapse early this week. Yesterday we did dinner at Terroni with my new most favourite person in the world, Kat Turchik, otherwise known as Penny Lane. We hit up the pre-halloween party at Balisi, the Desaranno event at Ame, and finally… the CRASH event at the AGO- good times had by all!

We checked out this amazing stuff by Cube Works. The thing that was most surprising about the 16 year old rubik’s cube master was how fast he works to create these pieces. It was quite a sight to behold.

Daniel Buckman from Sony BMG. I swear, everywhere I go, he’s spinning, or final scratching, or whatever the kids are calling it these days.

Oh Kat, you’re so multi talented.

Our fave homegrown magazine, TCHAD Mag was at the event too.

Some amazing live violin entertainment.
Fritz Helder and The Phantoms threw down an AMAZING performance as they literally danced their way through the tuxedo’d crowd gathered in the new atrium of The AGO.

This woman was right in the front row dancing along with the hot young things. This is what I aspire to be.

Ports 1961 Fashion Show at The Spoke Club

Thursday, October 29th, 2009
We were lucky enough to be invited to not one, but three nights of fashion, music, and fun at The Spoke Club, hosted by Tchad Magazine and sponsored by Cheek Magazine . Two of my Toronto faves.

The Friday night festivities proved to be one of my favourite nights of LGFW. We braved the winds and pissing rain, and made a mad dash for The King Street entrance of The Spoke Club. Out of the elevator, we were greeted with dirty martinis at the door- just the way I like them, and then whisked down into the lower level gallery space, which had been converted into an intimate runway with seating, for the Ports 1961 SS’10 collection,

As we sipped cocktails from the front row, our own Kate Mullin, Publicity and Relations Manager for The Artist Group Limited (TAG) was buzzing around backstage (and on) to ensure all was running smoothly before the show began. All the hair and makeup for the show was done by artists represented at TAG. We were so proud of her- I think I cheered a little as she walked down the runway- yes Kate, sorry, that was me! All throughout the week she was pointing out which shows/events were using artists represented at TAG- and we could only imagine how frickin busy her week must have been.
I loved the dark, dramatic eyes and the overall look had a dream-like quality that made the models seem as though they were floating down the runway.
Loved the looks. Loved the structure of the pieces. So feminine. Definitely going to hit up Ports 1961.

To top off an amazing cultural experience, we moseyed back up to the upper level and enjoyed calamari and braised beef poutine (sorry diet regime) at the bar while listening to Dj, Jo Jo Flores (love love love) mixing beats!

Paul Hardy

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009
After the HOT LIGHTS panel (pics to come), we jetted over to the highly anticipated Paul Hardy show with some of our featured photographers where we got to sit front row to view the visions in white that he so eloquently sent down the runway.

The Future Home of Fashion

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009
Stopped by the new home of LG Fashion Week Beauty By L’Oreal Paris yesterday at 1030 King Street West. Wowzas. What a space! It was like a fashion compound! And I got to visit the future home of our labour of love, HOT LIGHTS. The soon-to-be-transformed space known as The Showroom, will house our panel discussion with featured Canadian fashion photographers on Wednesday October 21 at 1pm.

Behind The Scenes Photoshoot with Mackenzie Duncan

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Few words describe the magic that happens when an FT videographer connects with a photographer, who connects with a fresh faced 14 year old model, who connects with a trampoline, in front of 20 onlooking, industry eyes. Throw in a couple designer stems with tennis balls on the heels and the words “Mackenzie Duncan” come to mind. Oh, and “fucking awesome” too.

His team:
stylist: Marcus Tripp (Ford)
Hair: Brennen Demelo (Ford)
Make-up: Evgeny (Ford)
Model: Asha (Ford)

Clothes: NADA
When we asked Mack who thought of the tennis ball on the heel idea, he said “It just came to me. Plus I might return the trampoline tomorrow and I don’t want it to be damaged. I mean really, what am I going to do with a giant trampoline?” I could think of a few things, and apparently so could Kate. We barely got in the door before she threw her shoes aside and started jumping with the glee of a six year old. You go Kate!
In Fashion’s Glen Baxter dropped by and before we knew it, his camera man, Jeff was on the trampoline too. Who could resist?

from pain to pleasure

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

This is an exhibit I would love love love to go to… except its in London.
sigh…
The London Fashion and Textile Museum is hosting a new and exciting exhibition…
“Undercover: The Evolution of Underwear.”
Tracing the evolution of underwear is sure to make any woman happy to have been born in this time and place.
Ideas about beauty and the female form have changed drastically through the years, and lingerie has illustrated that.

bit of a backgrounder… 3 words to describe each.

the women of Crete in the pre-Christian days: tight. bone. corset.
the Renaissance brought a new focus to womanly curves: dangerous. destructive. breathless.
the 19th century: reconstructed. freedom. support.

Exploring a number of themes… Undercover looks at celebrity branding; the labels we wear today; and how advertising has not only molded society, but importantly, the girl of today.

We all have our favourites…
marlies dekkers
Fred and Ginger beau
hanky panky
cosabella dorothy
charotte russe
fleur’t

to name a few… just be ready to spend a pretty penny.

I personally have a tiny crush on the new stella mccartney silk shorts.
Not only am I impressed by the warm & soft creamy fabrics that we have today but also how lingerie is kicking seriously butt and influencing some of the biggest names.
Fall 2009. Richard Nicoll. Strong linear elements and lingerie detailing… he plays with the contrast of structure versus softness.
metallics and porcelain whites… check it out.
j’adore.
